Membership Requirements

IMPORTANT: EVERYONE MUST SUBMIT A COPY OF DD 214 OR DISCHARGE.

Request Military Service Records from the National Archives for free. Recent military and medical records are not online.
However, most veterans and their next of kin can obtain free copies of their DD Form 214 (Report of Separation)
and other military service records from the National Archives.

Why Should I Join?

 

Eligible veterans applying for first-time membership must submit
the following information to the Post Membership Committee:

  1. Complete American Legion MEMBERSHIP APPLICATION
  2. Uptain a copy of your DD214 DISCHARGE application.
  3. Print two (2) completed copies of your application. Keep one copy for your records. Mail the other copy to our POST 168 ADDRESS with your dues and a copy of your DD214 Discharge. The Dues amount is on the application. Applications are also available at our Post.
  4. Membership dues are payed with a check or a money order. Make checks payable to Cannon Beach Post 168. Do not send cash.
  5. If the information is correct, your membership will be approved, and you will receive your membership card in the mail.
  6. Eligible service era: Global War on Terror, Gulf War, Panama, Lebanon/Grenada, Vietnam, Korea, and WWII
  7. Eligible branches of service: U.S. Army, U.S. Navy, U.S. Air Force, U.S. Marines, U.S. Space Force, U.S. Coast Guard, Merchant Marines (WWII only).
    Because eligibility dates remain open, all members of the U.S. Armed Forces are eligible to join The American Legion at this time until the date of the end of hostilities as determined by the government of the United States.
  8. Must have served at least one day of active military duty during one of the dates below and honorably discharged or still serving honorably.

Transfers

Veterans applying for transfers from your current Post to Post 168 must submit the following:

  1. Completed Member Data Form
  2. Copy of DD214 DISCHARGE
  3. Copy of your membership card
  4. If the information is correct, membership will be approved, and a membership card will be mailed to you.
  5. Please submit membership dues with a transfer application. If you have paid your current dues, please pay dues for next year's membership.
